Chapman sends 12 athletes to 4A State Track

“Be proud you’re from Chapman,” Coach Michelle Elliott told her athletes as they were gathered in a circle before getting on the bus to the Regional qualifying meet last Friday, May 18, at Clay Center. Of the 15 athletes that participated on Friday, 12 will be attending the State Track meet in Wichita this coming Friday and Saturday, May 25-26. Coach also continued, “Just remember: believe in your body, believe in your mind, believe in your heart.” Malik Watkins also added to Elliott’s comments, “Leave it all out on the track”. That was just what the athletes did in Clay Center that day. To qualify for the State meet, athletes must be one of the top four finishers in each event.

With a lightning delay and tough competition, this was the hardest meet of the year for the Irish track team. They faced competition from as far west as Hays High School and from as far east as Kansas City Piper. The girls track team placed 4th with state qualifiers being Lindsey Anderson in the 1600m (4th place), Taylor Briggs in the 1600m and 3200m, McKenna Kirkpatrick in the Triple Jump (4th place), and Madison Smith in the 1600m (3rd place).
